Addressing Anti-Australian Bias

Right, well I've recently got a bee in my bonnet about the way in which Byron has displayed a distinctly Euro-centric bias in the photographs he has been displaying on his blog. What's wrong with a bit pride in Australia, the land of the Hills Hoist, V8 Supercars and VB? We've got picturesque countryside, and we've got culture. (I'm cultured, matter of fact, I'm eating yoghurt as I type this).

So, by way of subtle protest I have hereby included three photographs that were taken on genuine Australian soil, and I am offering points for those who can supply the requested information. The winner will receive the genuine replica boomerang that I recently discovered when I shifted a pile of papers from under my desk.*

Ten points if you can name the town in which this photograph was taken and twenty five points if you can name the street. Hint: the broadcast towers on the hill in the background supply residents of Victoria's second largest regional centre.

Ten points if you can name the town in which this photograph was taken, fifteen points if you can name the event that made it famous, and twenty five points if you can tell me the year in which that event occurred.

Ten points if you can name the highway this concrete pylon supports, fifteen points if you can name the artist who has used it as a canvas, and a fifty point jackpot (!) if you can name the Australian performance art troupe posing in the background.

*You will have to supply evidence of Australian citizenship: a photocopy of your birth certificate or a passport, certified by a JP, will suffice.

In my defense, check out these: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36.

No bias - just a truckload of Europe/US photos from a long trip at the end of last year (I'd just got a new digital camera and so went crazy taking photos). I also don't want the points to only be available to Australian readers (though some are very Sydney specific. Check out this).

Second photo is in Glenrowan, VIC, where Ned Kelly and his gang took part in a famous siege in 1880.

A very prompt and typically thorough response. I too know what a long holiday and a new camera can do to your life...

In my defense though, link 10 displays two pictures, one of which is definitely of foreign origin, link 15 has only one of five Australian portraits of Jess, and link 27, yes, might be taken on Australian soil, but the guy is the Bishop of Durham.

However, you've picked Glenrowan (and other associated details) like a dirty nose. Fifty points for Gryffindor!

Watch out! That boomerang is heading your way.

Hi Andrew!

I can't speak for Byron (except to be annoyed that he already gave the only answer I knew), but it's all about what photos you have. I think I'm more likely to want to take photos away from 'home'. Not that that says anythign about what is photogenic - I'm usually too busy enjoying the sights to stop and take a picture.

Then again, we now have a new camera, but the long holiday might have to wait.

It's been a long, long time since I last saw you and Amy!

Indeed it is true that one often takes more photos away from home. Like you I often forget to take photos altogether because I'm swept up in the moment. Indeed, I find that photographs often fail to capture exactly what it was that I really liked about a place. For me they serve as an aide de memoire instead.

Not to be misunderstood ... I was only seeking to have a laugh with this post - I don't really partake in much nationalistic rhetoric (except when watching the cricket) and I very much appreciate Byron's posts (text and photos).

Andrew - I'm impressed you went and checked all my links! (Hope they all worked) I knew I was on shaky ground with 10, 15 and 27 (you missed that 12 also has one foreign and one local photo, but that is difficult to tell...), so well done for keeping me honest! And as for being patriotic, I guess I've actually been pretty selective in my Oz pics, since I think I'm correct to say that I haven't actually included anything outside Sydney (which reflects the infrequency with which I travel outside the city!) and few things outside of the city and Camperdown/Broadway/Newtown. Apart from that world trip, I really do move in fairly limited circles...
