The sources we have for that period of first contact are so rich and intriguing, I'm not sure why we need a novelist to add in fictional bits. Clendinnen is so good at imaginative history - but I guess Grenville was able to bring the issues to a wider audience.

And you probably know that Clendinnen was at the same uni in Melbourne as Dening and also Rhys Isaac for quite a long time. The three of them became known world wide as trail-blazers in enthnographic history (and were collectively dubbed 'the melbourne school').

If you're enjoying that kind of stuff, why not cut to the chase and actually read Watkin Tench? His journal makes a terrific read. Grenville's new book the Lieutenant is also well worth reading.Meredithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05076364508884699137noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31383793.post-21416114586849881652008-12-14T07:53:00.000+00:002008-12-14T07:53:00.000+00:00I live near the Boxvale Track here in the Southern...I live near the Boxvale Track here in the Southern Highlands and enjoyed reading your description of it, especially the last paragraph where you write: "the degree to which it has been reclaimed by vegetation was a humbling reminder of how quickly many of our labours fade and are lost".
I felt humbled in a similar way, but also felt a sense of relief that the environment is able to recover to some extent from our "labours".
